Lundin For Africa


Stephen Nairne, Managing Director:

Mr. Nairne has served as Lundin for Africa's Managing Director since 2007. He is concurrently appointed as an Adjunct Professor at the University of British Columbia, where he teaches courses on Country and Project Risk Analysis in Developing Countries, and is a Member of Canada's Scientific Committee on Failed on Fragile States. Prior to joining LFA, Mr. Nairne served as Deputy Director with Canada's Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade's Pacific Office and as Senior Political Risk Analyst at Export Development Canada. He holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree from McGill University and a Master of Arts from the Norman Paterson School of International Affairs at Carleton University. His most recent publication, "Nigeria: Mapping Political, Economic, and Business Scenarios in the Post-Obasanjo Era," was published by the Canadian Defense and Foreign Affairs Institute in June 2007.




Karamo N.M Sonko, Special Advisor:

Mr. Sonko is Vice President of Tasiast (Mauritania) Ltd., a subsidiary of Red Back Mining Inc. (a Lundin Group Company). He is an Advisor, Business Development and Strategy (Africa) for the Lundin Group. He has a B.A. (First Class) from the University of Swaziland, M. Phil. from the University of Cambridge, UK, and a Ph.D (with Distinction) from the University of Denver, CO, in international economics & development. Before his transfer to Mauritania in September 2007, he was Director of Business Development & Strategy, Champion Industrial Minerals Inc. (another Red Back Mining subsidiary). He has advised many multinational companies on thier African investment strategies, worked for a number of international institutions, including the United Nations and the International Monetary Fund, and taught at four universities in the United States and France. He has written and published extensively on Africa and has served as a Special Advisor to Lundin for Africa since 2006.




Ryan Torvik, Chief Financial Officer:

Born in Canada in 1974, Ryan Torvik is a Canadian Chartered Accountant and a graduate of the University of Saskatchewan where he obtained a bachelor of commerce degree. He worked for KPMG in the areas of audit and advisory services from 1997 to 2001. From 2002 until 2005, he worked overseas in a number of positions, including Audit Manager and Acting Chief Investigator for the Government of the Federated States of Micronesia and in 2007 accepted the position of CFO of Fortress Minerals Corp. Mr. Torvik has over 12 years of financial management experience and has been working with not-for-profits and charities for over 10 years.




Sophia Shane, Director of Development:

Since joining the Lundin Group in 1995, Ms. Shane has held a series of key positions in the areas of investor relations and corporate development. An avid traveller, she has had an opportunity visit many countries in which Lundin for Africa is active and provides overall leadership to the Foundation in the areas of donor relations and corporate parnterships. Prior to joining the Lundin Group, Ms. Shane started her career at Odlum Brown Limited, a highly respected Canadian brokerage firm. Ms. Shane is a Fellow of the Canadian Securities Institute and a member of the Canadian Investor Relations Institute, and currently sits on the board of a number of public traded companies.




Michelle Fyfe, Administration Manager:

Ms. Fyfe joined the Lundin Group in 2004 and currently serves as Lundin for Africa's Adminstration Manager. Her commitment to, and involvement with, community empowerment intiatives spans more than fiften years in for-profit and non-profit sectors alike. Prior to joining the Lundin Group, Ms. Fyfe was actively involved with a number of Aboriginal groups, including the Vancouver Aboriginal Transformative Justice Society, the Circle of Eagles Lodge Society, and the Native Community Law Offices Association of British Columbia. Michelle also founded her own small business, where she provided aboriginal engagement services to a number of leading Canadian companies. Michelle has post-secondary education in Criminology, has completed professional courses in Conflict Resolution, and Mediation and Facilitation, and is currently working towards completing her Financial Management Diploma at the British Columbia Institute of Technology.

 
The Lundin for Africa Foundation is a Canadian registered charity and has a more limited mandate than the Lundin for Africa Society. The Foundation provides project-based grants to registered Canadian registered charities operating in Africa (or "qualified donees" as that term as defined in the Income Tax Act (Canada)).

The Society is a Canadian not-for-profit organization that funds projects in Africa through a mixture of grants and impact investments.
