Chiansi Irrigation ProjectThe Chiansi Irrigation Project, co-invested with Infraco, FMO, and EAIF, provides an innovative financing model for aggregating and empowering smallholder farmers to improve agricultural productivity, scale and incomes. During the pilot phase, 560 hectares of land has been divided;into multiple land use classifications – smallholder reserve, mixed, and commercial-- with the bulk accruing to the commercial entity. Invested funds were used to purchase bulk-water and infield pivot irrigation systems. In exchange for leasing their land to the commercial entity, the smallholder's cooperative received a 25% equity interest in the commercial entity. Once unsecured debt notes have been repaid (8-10 years) from farm revenue, the cooperative will assume full ownership of the farm. This project falls under the auspices of the Lundin for Africa Society, a Canadian not-for-profit organization that funds projects worldwide, with the goal of implementing sustainable community development programs in Africa.
